February 2012 - A Touchy Subject

  • A Touchy Subject

These days there are countless material options for Interior Designers and their clients to choose from. So, why do we choose certain materials? Is the colour or a particular pattern the driver? What influences our decisions?

People dress in clothes – buildings and interiors in materials. A certain texture often aims to express individuality and character. Textures fascinate me and I like working with them – they are part of my style. Responding to texture is something I do everyday when making decisions about my designs. It’s not only the colour or the pattern that matters, but also the feel. I strongly believe that textures of materials are an important aspect of interior design, as materials with an unique texture can give a space a very individual character and identity.

January 2012 - Colourful Trends

  • Colourful Trends

Co- ordination is vital for this year’s trends. By carefully considering a good base of neutrals we can link rooms and areas together with colourful pattern. Stripes and mini prints will marry colour schemes together, fabrics, wall coverings and furnishings will not match exactly but have a key colour in common. We are all aware how colour can affect our moods and the psychology attached to certain colours. It is suggested that we always turn to purple hues in times of monetary uncertainty. If more colour and pattern are becoming used in the home it is hopefully an indication of a more optimistic mood to come but if a bit of pattern and colour can uplift the spirit of the nation, then let’s decorate!

November 2011 - Work Surfaces

  • Work Surfaces

EBuyers Guide to Work Surfaces

The Work surface is the single most important element in the kitchen. It is where al the work is done and it connects all the elements of the room. Which is why when planning your kitchen, choosing a worktop is one of the most crucial decisions you will make. From colour and texture to durability and maintenance, the material you choose is key.Think about how much time you’re willing to spend looking after your worktop, as some need more maintenance than others. If you feel you have to be careful with your worktop, you won’t be able to work efficiently. In terms of style, if your units are doing the talking, you may want to choose an understated surface.

October 2011 - Shower Rooms

  • Shower Rooms

Energising spa space or a wet room worthy of a boutique hotel

A shower room can be squeezed into the smallest of space as long as it is a minimum of 2 m high and 1 m wide. Think about wether you want an enclosure. Some people prefer a cubicle or you may want to keep things as open as possible, but always considering installing a screen to stop the basin and the toilet from getting wet. If you can natural ventilation is best, but otherwise invest in an extractor, and make sure your overall plumbing is up to the job, If you have a gravity-fed system or low water pressure, it may not be sufficient to support a shower in the loft, if the system is either a mega flow system or a high pressure combi boiler then there is no problem.

September 2011 - Creating Order and Symmetry

  • Buyers Guide to Curtains

It’s official - smart homes are sporting curtains again.

Whether it is a return to cosiness (think of the renaissance in carpet), eco consciousness (they keep heat in), noise insulation (creating a downtime sanctuary) or just a desire to use some gorgeous fabrics out there, people are increasingly deciding to drape. And curtains can make a sound investment. A good pair of curtains will last 20 years or more and can be adapted to different window sizes. Colourwise, the current trends range from classic neutrals to punchy brights. Often plain fabrics in soft greys, silvers and clays can be used to offset statement wallpapers and contemporary paint colours.

August 2011 - Creating Order and Symmetry

  • Creating Order and Symmetry

The Ground Rules

People often think symmetry means using even numbers, but working with odd numbers feels more natural. It’s a bit like planting bulbs: groups of three and five look better than two or four. Identify the room’s focal point and find a balance. With a fireplace, if you put a table on one side, you want something on the other and, unless it is of the same visual weight, you feel uncomfortable. Symmetry and order may seem inconsistent with the very notion of creative interior design, but these classical qualities underpin the most relaxing schemes.

July 2011 - Buyers Guide To Sofas

  • Buyers Guide To Sofas

Which one to buy?

The right Sofa can make a striking statement and provide comfort for you and your guests for years, so it’s a purchase that needs some consideration. New technology has led to exciting features and shapes in seating that weren’t possible a few years ago. Innovative styles, tactile textures and gorgeous fabrics in every imaginable hue mean the range on offer is greater than ever. But with a little forethought, it is easy to narrow down the field to find the best option for you.

June 2011 - Breaking The Rules

  • Breaking The Rules

Breaking The Rules

Challenge the traditional design commandments with confident ideas and set your decorating spirit free. Zoning doesn’t have be dictated by room’s natural breaks – a fireplace, say. Draw a line wherever you fancy and make space work for you. This type of asymmetrical decorating can have huge impact and can be done with bold wallpaper that defines a lounge area and at odds flooring which defines different uses in the same space i.e. an office.

May 2011 - The Sociable Kitchen

  • The Sociable Kitchen

Cook and entertain ...

A kitchen provides the space for both cooking and entertaining can offer the perfect backdrop for relaxed living, particularly if you are the sort of host who enjoys cooking and chatting at the same time. Getting the format right, however, is not as simple as just providing a table and chairs. Logistics are all, and today’s designers are skilled at directing traffic to keep guests and children away from danger hot-spots (and out of your way), as well as giving you a comfortable, easy –to-use work station.

April 2011 - A Sense of Symmetry

  • A Sense of Symmetry

Is it important to Maintain a sense of symmetry in a room?

In nature, there is a direct correlation between faces that we find beautiful and symmetry of features. The same sense of attraction underpins our relationship with rooms and the balance of objects within them, and can extend beyond buildings and landscapes, to whole urban spaces, such as the squares of 18th century cities. Symmetry provides a calm background to the chaos of daily life.
